Norma Markley graduated from the Cleveland Institute
of Art and was awarded an MFA in painting from
Columbia University. Internationally, she has exhibited with one-person shows in the Netherlands,
Belgium, and the US. She was included in the Queens International 2006 Queens Museum, Art on Paper
Weatherspoon Art Museum 2006, and NextNext:Art at the Brooklyn Academy of Music 2002, and in 2003, she was
the recipient of a NYFA New York Foundation for the Arts award in Drawing. She lives and works in New
York. It is the clash or intersection of sex and Americana
that she paints with cut paper, draws with thread, embroiders on towels, or
writes with the glow of neon
tubing. She coaxes these incongruent elements until they sit well together, creating works that have been
described as “thoughtful symbols of throwaway culture".
